Spring 2009 Conference Summary

The 2009 spring meeting of the New England Chapter of the American Society for Indexing was expanded to a full-day conference this year. It was held at the student center at Worcester State College on Saturday, March 21. We had a group of more than 30 attendees including both members and nonmembers. The morning speaker was Steve Ingle who was joined during a question and answer session by a panel of members from his indexing company WordCo. This was followed by a half-day workshop presented by Heather Hedden.

Indexing as a Balancing Act
Presented by Stephen Ingle, President and CEO of WordCo Indexing Services, Inc.
This presentation focused on the many factors that have to be taken into consideration by the indexer, including client specifications, space limitations, time constraints, audience, and content and style.

Creating Web Site Indexes
Presented by Heather Hedden, Principal of Hedden Information Management
In this half-day seminar, Heather instructed participants on how to create hyperlinked back-of-the-book style indexes on web sites or intranets. This workshop, based on Heather's online course, has also been presented at the ASI national conferences in Toronto (2006) and Philadelphia (2007).
