Spring 2008 Meeting Summary

April 5, 2008
Chelmsford, Massachusetts

The 2008 annual spring meeting of the New England Chapter of the American Society for Indexing (NEASI) was held on Saturday, April 5, 2008 from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm at the Chelmsford Public Library in Chelmsford, MA. We had a big turnout of forty people, many of whom were new to indexing or interested in finding out how to become an indexer. The participants came from all six New England States as well as New York.

The Freelance Taxonomy Business
Presented by Heather Hedden
This presentation defined controlled vocabularies, thesauri, taxonomies and other related terms; discussed the types of taxonomy and controlled vocabulary projects that are available and where to find freelance clients; and offered marketing tips.

Editing Your Index: A Panel Discussion
Panelists: Steve Csipke, Linda Dunn, and Joan Shapiro
A panel of three experienced indexers spoke about how they edit their indexes and shared helpful tips.

Indexing for an Audience: Where You'll Find New Opportunities
Facilitated roundtable discussions were held (at rectangular tables) on the following topics:

    How Do I Become an Indexer?; Getting That First Job (But I Have No Experience!)
    Facilitated by Christine Hoskin and Jean Jesensky

    Marketing Strategies
    Facilitated by Heather Hedden

    Preparing Estimates and Contracts;
    Negotiating and renegotiating rates, terms, and deadlines; and scheduling, juggling and meeting deadlines.
