Spring Meeting 2007 Presentation

Indexing for an Audience: Where You’ll Find New Opportunities

Presented by Lynda Moulton

Lynda Moulton’s presentation put the field of knowledge management (KM) into context for those in the indexing field and explored how indexers might segue into the KM field. Her presentation provided examples of electronic indexes from a variety of sectors, including government, commercial, and academic websites, and addressed in detail the need for and purpose of electronic indexes. To paraphrase Moulton, electronic indexes facilitate searches, provide contextual framework, and to define the scope of content.

Moulton briefly discussed the jargon used in the field and the technologies used to build electronic indexes. She then illustrated the connection between searching and indexing in terms of content creation, content organization, and access and retrieval, as well as the use of taxonomies in electronic indexing, providing a glimpse of the various tools and resources available for building taxonomies, such as MultiTes, Terabase, WordMap, and other general resources.

Finally, Moulton described the competencies an indexer would need to move into the KM field, such as communication skills, teamwork skills, search experience, and flexibility. In particular, Moulton focused on the challenges of working in a team and managing projects within the KM field. Moulton ended her presentation with a useful discussion of the resources available for undertaking a job search in the field, such as the job sites available through the web sites of the Boston KM Forum, the Boston Chapter of the SLA, AIIM, ASIS&T, and specific company web sites.

Lynda Moulton recently joined The Gilbane Group as Lead Analyst for Enterprise Search. She is also principal of LWM Technology Services, a knowledge management consulting practice, where she advises enterprises on strategies to facilitate knowledge sharing, focusing on collaboration and technology implementations for content resources. She authored Data Bases for Special Libraries: A Strategic Guide to Information Management on database application development for corporate records, information resource management, indexing and search using DBMS and 4GL technologies. Lynda has taught graduate courses and written numerous articles on professional competencies, content management, taxonomy development, and database design. She began her career in library and information science at Union Carbide and Arthur D. Little. Lynda has been a leader of the Boston KM Forum since 2003, and is a past leader in divisions and chapters of the SLA.
