The 2005 annual fall conference of the New England Chapter of the American Society of Indexers was a full-day event held Saturday, September 24, at the conference center of College of the Holy Cross and was attended by 43 participants. Following is the program with links to presentation summaries.

Morning program: Taxonomies and Indexers

Taxonomies, Indexing, Search and Navigation: Connecting the Dots
Presented by Seth Earley of Earley & Associates, Inc.
This presentation focused on the taxonomy derivation process and how it relates to indexing. It looked at what ways that taxonomies can be applied to search and navigation problems and at the structure of a taxonomy project.

Indexers Evolve: Hands-on Learning Opportunities in Semantic Integration
Presented by Jean Graef, of the Montague Institute
This presentation described a hands-on learning lab that not only helps indexers acquire skills in these emerging areas but also allows them to showcase these capabilities to prospective clients.

ASI Indexing Certification Course
Presented by Seth Maislin, ASI vice-president
Seth Maislin presented a brief overview of the the new ASI indexing training and certification program currently under development.

Indexing Specialties

Web Site Indexing: Techniques and Issues
presented by Heather Hedden, of Hedden Information Management
Creating back-of-the-book style indexes for web sites and intranets is another way that indexers can add variety to their work. This presentation analyzed web site index examples and gave a brief demonstrations of using two web indexing tools. It also discussed issues peculiar to indexing web sites, what kinds of web sites are best suited for indexes, and how to market in this new area.
