Fall 2002 Conference Summary

Shrewsbury, Massachusetts

The 2002 annual fall conference of the Massachusetts Society of Indexers (MSI) was a full-day event held Saturday, October 26, at the Hoaglund-Pincus Conference Center, University of Massachusetts Medical School in Shrewsbury, MA. Workshops were presented by nationally prominent indexing professionals on the subjects of indexing specialties, web indexing, and on using the indexing tool CINDEX.

Indexing Specialties

Presented by Alexandra Nickerson

An overview and comparison of indexing textbooks, medical books, cookbooks, technical material, and medical journals was presented. Special features and issues affecting each type of material were discussed.

Alexandra Nickerson, owner of Alexandra Nickerson Indexing Services, has been indexing since 1965. She has served ASI as president (1997-1998), vice-president, director, H.W. Wilson/ASI Award Committee chair, Heartlands Chapter chair, and Education Committee chair. She was an instructor for the USDA Graduate School basic indexing course for six years.

Web Indexing  

Presented by Dave Ream

A discussion of web indexes was presented, including definitions, various types of web indexes, comparisons to print indexes, and technology used to create web indexes. This session covered design criteria for print and web indexes, and methods for handling locators and links.

Dave Ream is Leverage Technologies’ chief consultant for publishers. He has a M.S. degree in Computer Science from Case Western Reserve University. Dave Ream has spent over 28 years working with publishers in the areas of typesetting design and production, database creation, editorial systems, and electronic publication design and production. LevTech also performs computer consulting and programming for editorial applications as well batch composition services.

CINDEX Software Demonstration

Presented by Frances S. Lennie

In this fast-paced overview of the CINDEX program's features, Frances Lennie will (1) demonstrate efficient data entry and editing techniques, (2) different sorting, formatting, and styling options, and (3) advanced editing techniques and applications. Frances will also be available throughout the day and after the demonstration to answer individual questions.

Frances S. Lennie is the owner of Indexing Research which provides indexing services in a wide variety of subject areas as well as overseeing the development and marketing of CINDEX indexing software for both Windows and Macintosh platforms. Frances is currently serving on the ASI Board as its Vice-President/President-Elect.
